As the TINY monkeys TINY organs sat on the TINY floor of the TINY room….

HOMEWORK: Exploring the Line

For this assignment we were instructed to go out to the line and find a way to explore it more (for more info on the line see previous posts). We had to select four means of exploring the line in a deeper way, and then chose one of them to really explore even deeper.

For my four explorations i chose to first look at the area through a smaller field of view. I did this through the use of a macro lens. Some example are shown bellow, and the rest can be found HERE!

IMG_9632IMG_9705IMG_9663IMG_9693

Next I decides to examine the different trash that could be found along different parts of the line. Again, I did this through my camera, but maybe unfortunately and maybe not, I wan unable to find much to take photos of, so this file will be a little slim. Again, more images can be found HERE!

Next I decided to explore the line by using found objects to make a series of 30 second sculptures. This is what i got.IMG_9634 IMG_9642 IMG_9650 IMG_9670

Lastly I decided to explore the different trees found along the LINE and explore how the types and ages of trees change as the line progresses. For a whole lot more pictures of trees click here!

Walking the line.

Yesterday the foundations class was divided and each group was assigned a section of the “Line”. Each group then had to explore their section and prepare to give a tour of their section the next day.

So, the “Line” is a line one mile long that crosses through both Alfred state and Alfred university. Check out the map HERE!

Today we went on our hike and as far as i could tell we all had alot of fun. Due to the immense number of photos i took i am unable to post them here. Instead GIVE THIS A CLICK TO SEE A MY HALF OF THE CLASS’S ADVENTURE!

Here are a few that i felt stood out for your viewing pleasure!

Homework: PERSONAL TERRITORY TOUR, Exploration Edition.

This morning at 8:00 AM the Studio research section of foundations stumbled into the studio, exploration kits in hand ready for a day of adventure.

We began by getting in groups of two, then we pared up with another group of two and each exchanged our kits with those of the other group.

My partner was Fredal and we exchanged our kits with Natalie & Mary.

We began with Natalie’s kit which at first sight seemed a bit simple.

IMG_8982

But after taking it apart and reading the instruction it turned out to be extremely well thought out and well prepared.

IMG_8988

We first had to find the spot and then climb down into it. Next we where instructed to make ourselves a cup of tea, (it was 36 degrees out!) light some incense, relax, and enjoy the space. Overall it was a really great experience and i hope to have the opportunity to go back and do it again! See more pictures below!

Next we went on Mary’s tour, which was interesting to say the least. We were given this container,

IMG_9003

And it had us go into a small alley and describe how we would use each of the objects in the jar to defend ourselves if need be.

IMG_8992 IMG_8993 IMG_8995 IMG_8996 IMG_8997 IMG_8999 IMG_9002

Overall i am left a bit confused as to how i feel about that space and the activity. The kit seemed a bit rushed, but for the topic and idea it fit and even seemed well thought out.

Below are a few more categorized pictures from the day!

Enjoy 🙂

Homework: PERSONAL TERRITORY TOUR

For our personal territory tour we where instructed to chose a location within a ten minute walk of the Cohen studio. Next we had to explore our new found location, and create a self guided tour kit that would allow some one else to experience our location as well. The full assignment can be found HERE. Information in quotes is text taken directly form the exploration kit i created for my site.

For my location I chose a rock in the middle of a creek that runs behind the Cohen studios and is under a cozy green bridge. (see picture)

IMG_8943

“My space extends over the Surface Area of my rock. My space actually extends a Little Further, But i hate to split hairs. My space extends up to Your belly button. Please try to stay Within my space (You may need to crouch a bit).”

In order to explore my space i undertook several activities:

in order to find my spot i started my walking out of the Cohen studio and int the creek (i love creeks). i walked along it until i found the perfect spot. Next I stepped out of the creek and onto my rock and observed how the water off the bottom of my boot puddled and formed a wonderful boot print!

IMG_8963

Next i decided to see what the water looked like, so i decided to dive in head first (took my shirt off to keep it dry). As it turns out, the water was wet! I additionally discoverer that hair gel, when it gets wet, reconstitutes and will begin to drip down your face!

IMG_8954 IMG_8960

Next i decided to examine the make up of the rock. It seems to contain alot of quarts, but not being a rock expert i feal i missed out on a lot of valuable information from this observation.

IMG_8955 IMG_8956

Lastly i began to explore the things around my rock and found some spectacular dried leaves, so i snapped a picture, and maybe even ate a few, but my secretes are my secrets and yours are yours. 🙂

IMG_8957

In order to develop the tour for my space I first explained how to get to my space:

“To find MY place, begin at the Cohen Center. Head away from Main Street & towards Canacadea Creek. Once you reach the creek, walk up stream until you hit a Green Bridge. Beneath the bridge, in the middle of the creek, is a rock. This is MY ROCK.”

Next i thought about the different information that i found interesting and created a task list of things that i would like someone else to experience.

“While you are in my space please complete the following:

  1. Put on you Gloves.
  2. Grab your Tube.
    1. Please Fill it with Dry Leaves.
  3. Whip out your Bottle.
    1. Fill it with “Cricky” water.
  4. Select One rock. (no larger than a Baseball, and no smaller than an Egg.)
  5. Find your Note Book. Using the include pen, Record the following:
    1. Whack my rock, What do you hear?
    2. Sketch my rock.
    3. Smell my rock.
    4. Ask it for its Name.
  6. A few Optional observations include:
    1. Taste my rock.
    2. Have a Conversation with my rock.
    3. Befriend my rock.
    4. Love my rock.
  7. Record any additional Notes about my rock now.”

Attached is some information about my tour kit! (Refer back to the activities list for information on what everything does).

Saturday

Today, on a completely and undoubtedly unrelated subject, Kyle and I volunteered at the Scio Memorial Library. Our task was to clean and prepare the library for a guest speaker is going to present on the history of Scio NY. Most of our work was vacuuming, cleaning windows, and moving furniture. The work wasn’t to hard, and the weather was fine so i enjoyed hanging on a ladder all day scrubbing windows that had most likely never been cleaned. While we where working one of the librarians offered us a box of old encyclopedias which Kyle jumped at. Later on after more scrubbing I was offered a sewing machine. it seemed simple from the table and i had little time to inspect it so i said yes and took it home! When we got back to my dorm Kyle and I opened it up and got a nice little surprise. It was a 1955 Singer sewing machine! We immediately plugged it in and to our surprise and amazement the light lit up, and it runs like the day it was made! Right now i would love to clean it up a little more, grease it ups, and refinish the wood! Attached is a picture for your viewing pleasure! Stay tuned for “Homework: PERSONAL TERRITORY TOUR”

Fingers & Faces

Last Thursday we were assigned a project in which we were to create a series of blind contour drawings then, using stencil paper, create stencils using our drawings. Next we were to  use those stencils to create two drawings (a loose term here). I decided to go with acrylic paint (black) and create almost a “print” like effect for the first one.

IMAG0428 (1)

When i decided that i wanted to upload it to this (Amazing) blog i first wanted to crop and contrast-asize (an art term) the image to make it pop, like corn. I did my photo magic and a strange thing happened, the image became so crisp and beautiful, but simultaneously lost almost all of its information, leaving me with a highly pixelated MS Paint like image. Click on the image, ZOOOM in and check it out!

IMAG0428-5

The second one is still just in the beginning phases, but it should be done by this Friday!
